EARLY CHILDHOOD PROFESSIONAL - 3 Units

Gr. 11 and/or 12, 2 Semesters, Daily, 3 Hours, AM and PM Sections. A Career Education Consortium Center of Excellence, the Early Childhood Professional program at Herndon Career Center (East) prepares students to pursue two or four-year postsecondary education or work with children ages birth to ten in occupations such as teachers, child care workers, teacher assistants or private or home day care centers.  


Major units of study include careers in early chilhood; health, safety and nutrition; child development observation; child growth and development; curriculum and instruction; behavior management; working and communicating with families; managing and maintaining early childhood programs; child care laws, regulations and policies; and professional and leadership development.

The Child Development Center adjacent to the Early Childhood classroom provides daily, on-site training. Students also have the opportunity to apply their skills and observe children in other day care centers and public shcool programs and participate in volunteer internships. A second-year Special Topics class is available to students who excel. They may participate in paid internships and complete requirements to apply for the Child Development Associate Credential. Expectations: Prospective students should have an interest in becoming an early childhood professional and posess a true desire to nurture, motivate, teach and influence young children in a positive way. They must (1) provide their own transportation to and from assigned locations; (2) complete a TB test and physical examination prior to participating at day care centers or preschools; (3) pay a $25.00 fee for materials, services and lamination; and (4) provide additional minimal supplies as needed. Dual and articulated credit: Students can earn up to 16 hours of college credit at Penn Valley Community College.

Class size: 20 maximum per section.

PREREQUISITIES: MINIMUM OF 2.0 GPA; 90% ATTENDANCE RECORD; Minimum 9th grade-level reading, writing and math skills; C or better in grade-appropriate Applied Math, Biology and Communication Arts; B or better in Child Development and Parenting classes. RECOMMENDED: Classes in health, nutrition and psychology in addition to above prerequisiites.
